Winks are a simple way for guys to express their interest in each other.

On our website they appear in your messages inbox. In our apps they appear in a separate tab next to Tracks.

Those of you who use both the mobile and desktop service may notice inconsistencies in your message count. This happens because on desktop Winks are shared with you through your messages inbox, whereas on mobile they don't go into your messages inbox, they go to their own dedicated tab. We're updating the website so that you can view Winks and Tracks tabs in the same way as you do on mobile.

There's a bug in the app which means that if someone winks at you and sends you a message, the message can disappear from your conversations. If you think this has happened, login to the website to check your messages (this bug only occurs in the app). You can then delete the wink and the message will appear again in your app. We're working hard to squish this bug, and will let you know when it's fixed.

Update on issues with videos
18 November 2014 01:39 PM

We had also hoped it would be a simple matter to fix, which is why we were optimistic about the time we expected it would take to resolve. We have a very small team of incredibly talented and hard-working software developers here at Gaydar, who are working nights and weekends to try to restore normal service for you.

Sometimes things that from the outside might sound like they should be trivial to fix are in fact considerably more complex, particularly when you factor in legacy code-bases that need untangling, terabytes of media that need migration, and a myriad other technical challenges.

We appreciate your frustration, and can only apologise again. We really are doing our very best and the problem should be fixed in a couple of days.

Over the past few weeks some of you may have noticed the website hasn’t been quite as reliable as it’s normally been, and some of you may have experienced the odd wobble when using Gaydar.

We’d like to apologise for that, and give you a brief explanation as to what’s been happening behind the scenes:

Over the past 15 years Gaydar has had an exceptional up-time track-record, and we have strived to be there for you 24 x 7 x 365 days a year. However, as the original pioneers in gay dating, you’ll appreciate that some of our tech needs replacing after 15 years’ service. So, over the last 12 months we’ve been working hard to replace ALL of our technology in what is undoubtedly our largest technical undertaking ever, and will result in a significantly more reliable Gaydar that is faster and more responsive. More importantly, it will also enable us to completely update the website, and bring you some fantastic new products and features in the coming few months. At the same time, we’re undergoing an unprecedented growth spurt due to our new apps, so it’s especially critical that we take these steps now to increase capacity and ensure we can handle all the extra members online.

Tomorrow we’ll be doing the last major upgrade in our 12 month infrastructure replacement (switching to an entirely new database server), which will require a small amount of downtime (we estimate 2-3 hours all being well).

Over the next week or so, you should notice Gaydar is getting much faster, more reliable, and that new products and features come off the Gaydar production line much faster.

We’re all really excited that we are just a few weeks away from completing this mammoth milestone, and can then get back to the day job of re-inventing gay dating for the 21st century!

Again, we apologise for any inconvenience caused as we upgrade our technology, and we thank you for your patience and understanding.

Server Issues Resolved
06 October 2014 02:24 PM

You may have experienced some difficulty accessing Gaydar over the weekend due to intermittent server problems. We believe these have now been largely resolved, although we’re continuing to monitor the situation.

On this occasion, a hardware failure in our data centre meant that Gaydar was stretched to the very limit, which was made even worse by the high numbers of members using the site since we launched our new Apps.

Our engineers were working throughout the weekend to restore full access for everyone. Please rest assured that we’re working hard to make sure disruptions like this are kept to an absolute minimum, and are investing heavily in new infrastructure to cope with increasing demand.

Thanks for your patience, and for choosing Gaydar.

As you may have noticed, we are busy building and launching new products faster than ever before. Under our new management we are completely rebuilding all of our products, across all platforms.

This is a huge undertaking, but we are already making good progress, and you’ll be seeing more and more changes & improvements over the coming months.

Communication is core to our service – our raison d’etre is to help guys find and chat to each other. So as the highest priority we are addressing the messaging aspect of our products. Beginning last year with our new mobile optimized website, and followed up with the launch this year of our new iPhone app (and Android very soon), we are aiming to have a consistent experience irrespective of how you choose to sign in to Gaydar.

Because we don’t offer chat rooms on our smartphone applications or mobile web site, and because an increasing number of customers are connecting that way, it no longer made sense to allow people to send chat invitations, since the majority of people receiving them weren’t on a platform where they could accept the invitation anyway. It has led to considerable frustration, so we took the decision to remove this feature from the desktop website.

You can continue to use chat rooms on the website though, just as before, so don’t worry.

Thanks for your patience, and for bearing with us whilst we work on being the #1 dating site for gay men in the world.

Over the coming months Gaydar is moving to a new style of messaging across all its platforms (a process that started last year with the launch of the new mobile optimized website), to one that is more real-time 1:1 chat style (think iMessage, Whatsapp, Skype, etc) than the old email inbox system.

As part of this change we are removing the old ‘read receipts’ from our desktop website, as they are not compatible with the changes being gradually rolled out.

The new system is more instantaneous and in keeping with the way people are increasingly chatting on their phones. We’re sure you’ll find it much easier to use, and we thank you for your patience during the transition.
